Tracks:
Barber Motorsports Park, Birmingham, Alabama - Home of Porsche Driving Experience. Come see this place just for the wonderful natural environment, spectacular outdoor sculptures, cloned trees, and general ambiance; don’t miss the Barber Motorsports Museum with an unbelieveable collection of exotic motorcycles and rare automobiles; outstanding architecture throughout the park.
Carolinas Motorsports Park, Kershaw, South Carolina - pleasant if spartan surroundings; bring food; in the Fall, take a blanket to lay under the trees and enjoy the abundant leaf dance.
Texas Motor Speedway, Ft. Worth,Texas - a hot oval, where your rig will sink into the paddock paving when the thermostat hits 100; the folks in medical are generous with the I.V. fluids; it’s in the boondocks; be sure to eat at the Brazilian churasscaria in the track - authentic food at a reasonable price.
Daytona International Speedway, Daytona, Florida - take the museum tour, eat at the Mexican restaurant just east of the track, enjoy the beach, be prepared to be ousted from the paddock at night.
Laguna Seca, Monterey, California - awesome setting in the hills especially for full-moon events; easy access to cheap fresh-fish restaurants, as well as the “sights”; a must-do for tree or child-lovers: turn left coming out of the track and stop at the TreeHouse sales spot for immense and intricately carved treehouses complete with gnomes.
Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Las Vegas, Nevada - it will be hard to keep your eyes on the track with the Air Force jets zooming overhead; we’re not interested in the casinos, so no comment there, but a trip into town to see Cirque du Soleil is always a highlight of our stay.
Lime Rock, Lakeville, Connecticut - picturesque track set in rolling hills dotted with white farmhouse structures; weight gain guaranteed in this region; award-winning restaurants require reservations during race weekends; bring a raincoat; beware strictly enforced no dog rule at track; reserve a pet-friendly room at The Interlaken Inn and enjoy their breakfast overlooking the gardens, too.
Lowes Motor Speedway, Charlotte, North Carolina - not really in Charlotte!
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Lexington, Ohio
Moroso, West Palm Beach, Florida - tucked at the edge of the Everglades, Moroso is always peaceful; be sure to visit the canals with an eye open for lurking and quick- moving alligators; bring a fishing rod; take a camera for Florida fauna shots; relax.
Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin - the ceremonial calvacade up the hill to paddocks is quite lovely; good exercise walking up and down the hills, great viewing spots; a must do: visit the Town of Kohler and tour the Kohler Design Center, try the Corn Sausage Chowder at the Blackwolf Run Restaurant, shop at the Village Market in Kohler for yummy specialty foods and platters to take back to the track; the street identification system remains a mystery to us.
Road Atlanta, Braselton, Georgia - Home of the Audi Driving Experience, Saab Aero Academy, Panoz Racing; in springtime take a picture of the blossoming pear trees coming out of the Suzuki bridge; be sure to stop in at Chateau Elan to eat in the winery, enjoy the full spa, or visit the walking trail; bring shoes that tolerate clay; for pizza, eat at Mellow Mushroom in Winder or Dacula.
Roebling Road, Savannah, Georgia - safe track with immense run-off areas; nothing nearby to do or see, but the ride to Tybee Island is lovely, and the beach is made for walking; old-town Savannah is truly quaint.
Sears
Point, Sonoma, California - great viewing
from the hilltops, but little is visible from pit lane; enjoy
the ride in through
the vineyards, but be prepared for traffic if you head into town
for supplies; we find the highway system confusing trying to get
back to the track from Walmart.
Sebring International Raceway, Sebring, Florida - the Classic,
updated garages, with hotel now on premises; nothing to see in
town; plan to stay at the track and enjoy Florida outdoors, bring
suntan lotion; if you do not like drunken party crowds or have
children, stay away from the big events.
Virginia International Raceway, Alton, Virginia – loooooong track, hospitable staff, two terrific viewing areas; delicious hamburgers; media center folks happy to share a phone line for email downloads; wireless Internet hookup for the Paddock; dog friendly; lots of RV hookups.
